On May 26, 2010, IB and Secondary Division students experienced a real stage performance of Romeo and Juliet, Cyrano of Bergerac, Don Quixote of La Mancha, and our traditional ¨Sahriyé¨ in their original languages: English, French, Spanish, and Arabic. The performance was finalized by, Vivo per lei, a beautiful Italian song.
Students, educators and parents shared this unique occasion and were fascinated by the talents of our students. Everybody appreciated the power of Languages as a mean of communication and acknowledged the formation of cultures through Languages. Once again, Sagesse High School has proven to be a leader in Language Instruction allowing students to truly explore their skills and knowledge through an authentic Final Assignment.
On April 23, the death of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare, the most prominent writers of Hispanic and English literature, are commemorated.
In 1995, UNESCO declares April 23 as "World Book and Copyright Day".
UNESCO later on developed this concept into the “World Book Capital” awarded to a city recognized by the quality of its programs to promote books and readings.
Beirut is the ninth city to be designated World Book Capital. According to the Committee of UNESCO, the city of Beirut was selected “in the light of its focus on cultural diversity, dialogue and tolerance.”
On Friday April 23, 2010 the World Language Department organized a cultural event entitled "LI Beirut" to end the year of the World Book Capital and celebrate the occasion with students.
Students of the Secondary & IB divisions were introduced to Miguel de Cervantes and his most famous characters; Don Quixote, Sancho Panza and Dulcinea del Toboso in a play performed by students from IB1, Gr. 10 and SecI.
IB1 students also played two scenes from Romeo and Juliet, in honor to the great William Shakespeare.
A "poem contest" in both English and Spanish Languages was also part of the program. Sara Bou Reslan (SecI), Petra Bicanova (gr.10) and Ashley Abou Neim (gr. 10) won the first, second and third prize respectively.
